Utility bill payment API: what to check before you integrate
Biller coverage, bill fetch support, payment references and failure handling: the questions worth asking early.
Adding utility bill payments to a platform is different from adding recharge. Bills involve consumer numbers, amounts that change every month and billers with different rules. These are the points to settle before you write code.
1. Which billers, which regions
Coverage differs by biller and by state. Ask for the list of billers enabled for your account, and design your screens around it. Do not promise customers a biller you have not confirmed.
2. Does the biller support bill fetch?
Some billers allow you to fetch the current amount from a consumer number. Others require the customer to enter the amount. Your form should handle both cases.
3. What identifies a customer?
The required detail varies: a consumer number, an account ID or a registered mobile number. Ask for the exact fields per biller and show helpful hints beside each input.
4. Payment references and receipts
Store the provider reference, the biller reference if available, the amount and the time. Your customer should be able to see a receipt for every payment.
5. Failures and delays
A payment can be pending or fail after the customer has paid you. Plan how you will update the status, refund and explain the delay.
